Sri Lanka - The Pearl of the Indian ocean.
Something about the island......
Sri Lanka, Once in the past known as Ceylon and authoritatively the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island nation in south Asia. It lies in the Indian Ocean, southwest of the bay of Bengal. It is isolated from the Indian subcontinent by the inlet of manner and the Palk strait. Sri Lanka shares a sea border with India and Maldives. Sri Jayawardhanapura Kotte is the administrative capital and Colombo is the biggest city and the financial center.
Sri Lanka is a multinational country with over 22 million of population. it is home to various cultures, traditions, societies, and ethnicities. The Sinhalese are the majority of the nation's population, while the Tamils are the largest minority group. Sri Lankan culture is mainly affected by those two ethnicities. Burghers, Malays, Muslims, and the Indigenous Vedda tribe also live in Sri Lanka.
This island nation has a rich history that goes back 3000 years, with evidence of prehistoric human settlements that date back at least 125,000 years. Buddhism is the largest Religion in the country. Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity are the other main religions.
Sri Lanka is also called the teardrop of India and The pearl of the Indian ocean. Sri Lanka's geographical location and the deep harbors have made it of great strategic importance, from the earliest days of the ancient silk road trade route to today,s so-called maritime silk road. This is why many European nations came to capture this little island and try to join it in their empires.
let's talk about those nations in the next post.
Cheers
Dave
